My Neighbor Totoro Anime Film’s Chinese Theatrical Release Ranks #2

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli‘s My Neighbor Totoro anime film ranked #2 (below Aquaman) and earned US$12.9 million in its opening weekend in China. My Neighbor Totoro opened in China on December 14, and is the firstStudio Ghibli film to receive a theatrical release in China. Chinese distributor SCLA released the digitally remastered version in China, and the film is available both with subtitles and with a Chinese dub. The film’s Chinese poster is seen below.

Studio Ghibli plans to release other films in China if the My Neighbor Totoro release is successful.

This year, the film is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release in Japan in 1988.

GKIDS and Fathom Events screened the film in the United States in June 2017. GKIDS also licensed the film and released it on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in North America in October 2017.

Walt Disney Pictures previously released My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in North America in May 2013.
